World class competition at the NSW State Open Swimming Championships on the weekend enabled Sydney University swimmers to produce some top quality performances of their own.

Competitors from New Zealand, Brazil, Sweden and Hong Kong plus the majority of Australia’s FINA World Championship hopefuls converged on Sydney Olympic park in what will be their last opportunity to compete before the Australian Championships and World Championship Trials in March.

The three day meet showed that the Sydney Uni swim stars, Matt Jaukovic and Jono Newton are up for the task ahead. Both were impressive in their respective 50 meter races.

Matt Jaukovic was in a NSWIS hat-trick in the men’s 50m butterfly with Olympic bronze medallist Lauterstein taking the gold in a new NSW record time of 23.65.  Jaukovic, the world short course record holder clocked a personal best of 23.86 and comeback king Geoff Huegill who was third in 24.05.

Jono Newton was a close third in the 50m Free and stopped the clock in 22.72 behind World Record holder Eamon Sullivan.

“The results of the meet are indicative of what can be expected at the Trials” said coach Steve Alderman. He added, “Both Matt and Jono are on track for a fast meet at the trials”. The Australian Swimming Championships are on between the 17th and 22nd of March and hopefully both will gain selection in the Australian Swimming Team for Rome.
