The Sydney University Women’s Water Polo Club (SUWWPC) split their National League home opening stand against the highly ranked Fremantle Marlins, with both games ending 9-7 to either team.

In game one the Lions successfully shut down Freo’s national team representatives Zoe Arancini and Glencora Ralph and won comfortably, with Keesja Gofers scoring four goals and Whitney Delgado and Gabby Wikman contributing two apiece. Lea Barta once again proved a ‘brick wall’ in goals.

Game two was not such an easy run for the Lions as Ralph and Arancini removed the shackles to score four and two goals each, although the Lions did level the scores at 7-7 in the last quarter. Keesja Gofers once again led the offence with five goals, whilst the number of goals scored don’t indicate the magnificent game Barta produced behind the defence.

In the men’s competition, Sydney Uni lost both games to Fremantle, going down 11-8 and 15-14.

The girl’s next games are at home at the Sydney Uni Sports & Aquatic Centre against visiting KFC Breakers from Brisbane on Wednesday 13 February at 8.00pm and Saturday 16 February at 4.30pm.

The men take on the Breakers at 6.30pm on Wednesday and 6.00pm on Saturday.
