What an exciting final day in Wagga to cap off the 2015 EUG’s. In a day that would be full of heartbreaking grand final losses, the women’s basketball team managed to break the trend and bring home a gold medal.

The day began with an unfortunate loss by the men’s basketball team, who despite playing well couldn’t find a consistent shooting rhythm falling to Macquarie University in the semifinal. . The Macquarie team was on fire and got out to a great lead, never wavering.  The men ended up finishing 4th overall after a tough 63-89 loss to a very strong UOW.

The women’s basketball team had a perfect tournament, not dropping a game all week. The final day started with the team beating CSU 37-27. The girls were not at their best but managed to pull through even when things weren’t working for them. The final against UNSW was a different story. The team came out firing and kept the intensity for the entire game. The girls led from the start and always looked in control. Kate Cranney and Kate Hewett were very impressive on the court and Eleni Valos showed her experience to captain the team to victory.

The women’s netball team had a tough day on the court. They suffered a 22-31 loss in the semifinals to CSU, they then went on to finish 4th after an 18-45 loss to UC. The team had a fantastic week to finish 4th and will look to improve on this performance on the Gold Coast in a few months. The mixed netball team ended up finishing 6th overall which is a massive improvement and see’s the team qualify for Australian University Games in a few months.

The futsal women continued their amazing week beating ACPE 12-3 in the semifinal. This set up the grand final that everyone had been waiting for; Uni vs UTS. Last year, the uni team went down to UTS in the final and this year the girls were out for revenge and redemption. Unfortunately it was not to be, as the UTS side started off strongly and led from the start. The girls ended up with the silver medal with a 2-8 defeat. The futsal men’s team finished 11th overall after beating ANU 12-4.

The Ultimate team started the day off with a very tough semifinal encounter with UC. The game went back and forth until USYD got the advantage and managed to win 12-10. This set up the repeat final from last year against Newcastle. Last year, Newcastle got the better of USYD but the team was ready to claim the title this year. Unfortunately this wasn’t the fairytale finish the team was after as Newcastle completely dominated the game, winning 15-3. The team had a great week to earn silver and will be looking forward to the new format of the competition on the Gold Coast in a few months.

The lawn bowls teams managed to finish the competition 10th, 11th and 12th overall. The teams struggled against the experience of the other Uni’s but seemed to have a very good time on the greens each day, showing great sportsmanship.

The touch teams have finished the tournament with commendable outcomes. The men’s team suffered a heart breaking 6-7 semifinal loss to UWS. The UWS team would end up going on to win the gold, which shows how strong the USYD men’s team were. Unfortunately the disappointment of the loss showed in the bronze medal game, as the team were flat and ended up losing to UTS 3-5 to get 4th position overall. The men’s team showed great team work throughout the week and should be commended on such a great performance. The women’s touch team took the bronze medal on the final day of EUG’s. Due to their being no semifinals in the women’s draw, the USYD team went straight to a 3rd vs 4th game which saw them win against Macquarie 6-4. The mixed team finished 7th overall after beating UWS 9-3. Congratulations on a great week to all three Touch teams.

The men’s volleyball team has finished 2nd after a heartbreaking loss to UTS in the gold medal game. There were only 6 points separating the team for the entire match but unfortunately UTS managed to win those crucial points and take the gold medal. Antony Rowda was impressive for USYD and says he is looking forward to the rematch against UTS on the Gold Coast.

Our individual athletes have finished the week well. Alex Livingston was sitting 3rd overall in the golf competition leading into the final day. Alex said he had a shocker on the final day which meant he finished just outside the medals in 4th position. Although Alex may be critical of his own performance, to finish 4th overall is an amazing achievement, as the field of golfers was talented. Congratulations to Alex and all the other golfers on a great week.

The tennis men finished out a great week on the courts. The two stand out players for the week were Thomas Berrigan and Htay Aung. Thomas finished the week in 14th position while Htay finished in 11th position. This is a great achievement.

Overall the University of Technology Sydney ended up being the overall winners for 2015. USYD ended up in 7th position with a tally of 1 gold, 3 silvers, 1 bronze and 4 fourth positions. The entire team represented the University with pride and great sportsmanship and it was a great week.

GO USYD!!
