The first round of the NSW Water Polo Premier League was contested by both Sydney University Men’s and Women’s teams at the weekend.

Reigning Men’s OVO Australian National League champions Sydney University began their campaign against the UTS Balmain Tigers. In a fairly close encounter, Sydney Uni got the better of UTS, 11-7. Michael Rosenthal led the way for the Lions with four goals and Will Cotterill also added two.

Sydney University’s Women’s Premier League (L1) team finished weekend one of the NSWPL with a win and a loss. In their first match of their NSW Premier League campaign Sydney Uni had an impressive nine goal victory over SNB 13-4. Their excellent defensive display kept the SNB Breakers scoreless in the first half. Prolific s scorers Danielle Morrissey (four goals) and Carla Traplin (three goals) finished off a dominant performance from the Lions.

On day two of Round One, there was a rematch of the 2017/18 Women’s OVO Australian National League Gold Medal game between UNSW Wests and Sydney Uni. The defending champions UNSW took an early lead, with Uni trailing 5-1 in the first half.  This proved to be too much for Sydney Uni, who fell to an 11-6 defeat.

The NSW Premier League gives clubs a great opportunity to develop a lot of their younger players. Not only do the Sydney University Men’s and Women’s water polo programs have great success in the senior competitions, but there is exciting times ahead for the club with the juniors also producing great results.

In the NSW Water Polo Winter Competition Sydney Uni is strongly represented in the finals this weekend. The junior boys program have all six of their teams in the finals and the girls have three out of five teams competing at PLC on Sunday.
