Sydney University Lions posted back-to-back wins over Fremantle Mariners in the Round 10 clashes to stay in the top six in the Men’s Australian Water Polo League.

The Lions opened their account with a 13-10 win on Friday night at the Peter Montgomery Pool and backed that up with a close 10-9 effort on Sunday afternoon.

Goran Tomasevic and Thomas Kearns each posted three goals in the Friday contest. Tomasevic backed that up with another treble on Sunday along with three from Michael Rosenthal.

Sydney University’s women’s AWPL side won their Friday night encounter with the Mariners 14-12, with Zsofia Polak netting five and Danielle Morrissey scoring three.

The Mariners turned the tables on Sunday with a 12-9 result, thanks to Zoe Arancini and Erin Redbond who each scored three goals.

Drummoyne Devils head the  AWPL Men’s ladder on 58 points, with UNSW Wests Tigers (57), Fremantle Mariners (47), Hunter Hurricanes (45), Sydney University Lions (33) and Queensland Thunder (30) making up the top six.

The AWPL Women’s ladder is headed by UTS Balmain on 60 points, with Queensland Thunder (52), UNSW Wests Killer Whales (51), Fremantle Marlins (41), Hunter Mariners (30 and UWA Torpedoes (30) making up the top six. Sydney University Lions are seventh on 29 points with two games in hand.

The Lions will host Drummoyne Devils at the Peter Montgomery Pool, Sydney University Sports and Fitness Centre on Friday night before taking on UTS Balmain Tigers at the same venue on Sunday afternoon.

Sydney University Lions 10 (Goran Tomasevic 3, Michael Rosenthal 3, Scott Nicholson, Nathan Cargill, Thomas Kearns, Raphael Pirat) defeated Fremantle Mariners 9 (Jordan Kremers-Taylor 4, Luke Pavillard 2, Tom Prior 2, Davis Verboon, James Fannan) at Peter Montgomery Pool, Sydney University Sports and Fitness Centre on Saturday.

 

Women: Sydney University Lions 14 (Zsofia Polak 5, Danielle Morrissey 3, Lauren Brennan 2, Isobel Bishop 2, Emma Lewis, Holly Young) defeated Fremantle Mariners 12 (Zoe Aranci 4, Sofia Chaves 3, Chloe Nella 2, Lara Zimmerman, Erin Redbond, Brooke Pensini) at Peter Montgomery Pool, Sydney University Sports and Fitness Centre.

Fremantle Mariners 12 (Zoe Arancini 3, Erin Redbond 3, Madeleine Quinn 2, Chloe Nella, Fanny Valyi, Pia Rodgers, Brooke Pensini) defeated Sydney University Lions 9 at Peter Montgomery Pool, Sydney University Sports and Fitness Centre.
