The University of Sydney has capped off success in Wollongong, claiming both the men’s and women’s overall pennants at the 2026 UniSport Nationals Triathlon Championship.
Held as part of the Peoplecare Triathlon Wollongong, the event brought together 54 of the country’s leading university triathletes across Sprint and Standard Distance racing, with Sydney University delivering standout performances across the board to finish on top of both overall standings.
The weekend was headlined by victories from several Sydney athletes, with Demi Burch taking out the women’s Standard Distance Unisport title in 1:58:58 and Cooper Lee producing one of the performances of the meet in the men’s Spirit Distances. Lee crossed the line in 58:18, the only UniSport competitor to break the one-hour barrier across the Sprint event.
Tilly Offord also delivered a commanding performance in the women’s Sprint Distance, winning in 1:02:02 to continue Sydney’s consistently strong showing throughout the championship.
Sydney University’s depth proved just as important as the individual victories. Holly Layson secured second place in the women’s Standard Distance, while Tyler Patterson claimed bronze in the men’s Standard event, helping Sydney Uni score strongly across every division.
The results ultimately saw The University of Sydney finish first overall in both men’s and women’s university standings, ahead of strong fields featuring UNSW, UTS and The University of Newcastle.
Head of Sport at Sydney University, Leonie Lum, praised the team’s collective performance.
“We’re incredibly proud to have taken out both the men’s and women’s pennants at the 2026 UniSport Nationals Triathlon,” Lum said.
“There were some exceptional individual performances throughout the weekend, but what stood out most was the consistency of the entire team across both events. To come away with both overall titles against such strong competition is a fantastic achievement for the program”
Whilst claiming overall honours, the championship also showcased the strength of university triathlon nationally, with athletes competing alongside more than 500 participants across the wider Peoplecare Triathlon Wollongong festival.
The squad was able to deliver when it mattered for Sydney University, a step in the right direction to go for our 8th straight Unisport Nationals Champions.
