USYD could not have asked for a much better day in Wagga. The day started out a brisk 4 degrees, which must have woken up our teams on day 3 because every team came out with a passion and a fire to win their quarterfinals and get themselves into great positions leading into the final day.

Our basketball teams continued their dominance in the competition. The women’s team had a tough day, having to play their remaining two pool games, which saw them beat out AVON and ACU quite comfortably. They were then straight into game three for the day which was the quarterfinal against Newcastle. Last year these two teams met in the gold medal game, where USYD won. The game started off slowly for the team and you could see that they were tired. At half time, Josh Collier, the team’s coach, had some stern words with the girls which saw the team make a positive turn around resulting in a twenty point win, 51-31. The women now face CSU in the semifinals.

The men’s basketball team had a more relaxed day with only one game to play; the quarterfinal against Cumberland. The game started off quite evenly matched but as the game progressed, the USYD men’s experience shone through and they won 42-23. The men’s team will now play in the semifinal against Macquarie which is sure to be an absolute cracker of a game.

Sydney Uni netball couldn’t have asked for a better day, with both the women and mixed teams winning their games. It was the women’s quarter final show down against Newcastle that stole the show though. This game kept everyone on the edge of their seats and multiple times during the encounter, it looked like Newcastle were going to be victors. The USYD team found themselves 3 or 4 goals behind almost every quarter and each time, they managed to find a way to claw back into the game. The fourth quarter is where the team really rallied together and played as a team. They found themselves down by 4 goals with 4 minutes to go and managed to score 7 unanswered goals to take the quarterfinal win, 24-21. The women’s team will now face CSU in the semifinals on the final day.

The futsal women continue their undefeated streak with another perfect day of play. The team met CSU in the quarterfinals and showed the class that they have in their team by posting a 9-1 victory. The girls will now meet ACPE in the semifinals on the final day of competition. The men’s futsal team had a tough day on the courts, losing both their remaining pool games. The team will play for 11th and 12th position on the final day.

The Ultimate team has remained undefeated throughout their pool games and into the playoffs where they won their quarterfinal match over ANU, 15-3. The young ultimate team will face off in the semifinals against UC on the final day of competition.

The Lawn bowls team have had close encounters on day 3, with two draws and a win on day 3 of the competition. The spirit of these teams is great and you can always count on good banter and good bowling when spectating. None of the 3 teams found themselves in quarter finals but on the final day of competition they will be playing for positions 9-13th.

The touch teams have had a great day on the field. The men’s team has found themselves in tomorrow’s semifinals. They got there by posting a great 10-3 win over UC in the quarterfinals. The men’s team will face off against a strong UWS in tomorrow’s semifinal match up. The mixed team had a heart breaking quarterfinal loss today and will now play for 9th and 10th. The women’s competition has too many teams, therefore the schedule does not have quarters and semi’s, rather 1 plays 2 and 3 plays 4. Due to the fact that the women started off slowly on day 1, they have narrowly finished 3rd after pool play, so will now play for 3rd and 4th on the last day of competition.

The volleyball team has had a perfect day, winning both their games on the final day of pool play. They too, have an interesting draw and like the women’s touch team, will be going straight to the gold medal game after finishing 2nd overall in group play. The team will face off against the extremely strong UTS team, which the men lost to yesterday. Rowda, the men’s captain is confident his side can bounce back from their loss and believes playing later in the day will be an advantage for his team.

Our individual athletes had mixed results today. On the tennis courts, Htay and Thomas both faced tough competitors in the round of 16 play. Both men narrowly lost their games which saw them face off against each other in the next round. The game was extremely tight but in the end Htay managed to get over Tom 8-5. On the final day of competition, all 4 of the tennis men will be playing to win their final games and place as high as they can. Htay could finish as high at 9th tomorrow which would be an amazing achievement.

Alex Livingston has had another great day on the golf course and still sits in the top 5. Tomorrow’s final day on the green will be crucial for Alex.

The day has been a great one for USYD, as we will fight for 8 gold medals on the final day of play. This would be an amazing achievement.

GO USYD!!
