The University of Sydney men’s basketball team fell agonisingly short in the 2025 New Balance University Basketball League yesterday, going down 79-70 to the University of Tasmania.

It was a contest worthy of the occasion, fast, physical and fiercely competitive, with Sydney leading for much of the opening three quarters before UTAS surged home in the final term to claim the title.

USYD came out firing, playing with composure and confidence on both ends of the court. Their defensive intensity and sharp ball movement saw them edge ahead early, with momentum firmly in their favour through the first half.

The third quarter again saw Sydney dictating tempo, their depth and unselfish playing keeping the scoreboard ticking over. But as fatigue crept in, UTAS began to find its rhythm, tightening its defence, forcing turnovers, and converting key baskets down the stretch.

UTAS held their nerve in the dying minutes to secure the win, ending Sydney’s incredible 2025 campaign just one shy of the ultimate prize.

While the final result wasn’t what they’d hoped for, the 2025 season was one of Sydney’s most impressive yet.

Their consistency and defensive discipline become hallmarks of their campaign, earning them a 7-2 regular-season record and a second-place finish on the ladder, cementing their reputation as one of the top programs in the country.

Across nine rounds, the team scored 869 points for a conceded 716, demonstrating both offensive firepower and defensive grit.

The Lions showed genuine resilience, depth and a competitive edge that carried them all the way to the Grand Final. While the loss will sting, there’s little doubt that the Lions will use this experience as fuel for 2026.
