It was another weekend of positive results for our men’s and women’s soccer teams as both sides came through with wins.

The women’s team came up against a difficult North Shore Mariners outfit in what was always going to be a challenging encounter away from home. Evelyn Chronis scored again for Sydney, continuing her red hot start to the year, taking her goal tally to 6 from 6 games.

Melissa Caceres also scored her first goal for the season, as did Emma Stanbury who was involved in everything, picking up a yellow card to go with her maiden goal on the season. The Sydney women ended up running out 3-0 winners, showing too much class for the Mariners.

The women’s team is tracking nicely as the weekends win takes them to second spot on the NSW National Premier Leagues Division One ladder, as we reach the end of the first third of the season. The girls have only lost one game and are just one point behind league leaders the Illawarra Stingrays.

The Sydney Uni men’s team picked up a solid win against Dulwich Hill at their new home ground on Sunday. Dulwich Hill looked far more impressive than a team that had only won one of their first six games. They started strong and had Sydney on the back foot early, netting a goal at the 33 minute mark.

Jonathan Gowdy however stepped up for Sydney Uni, scoring two goals to help Sydney come out on top 2-1. Gowdy has now scored 5 goals in 7 games, and is only trailing goal scoring machine Scott Tonkin as the team’s highest goal scorer for the season. The men now move into third position in the NSW National Premier Leagues Division Three standings.

With the Sydney Uni sides sitting in satisfying positions at this early point in the season, both teams will be looking for wins this weekend to solidify their positions on the ladder. The women take on the Football NSW Institute team at home (Sydney University Football Ground) on Sunday at 3pm, while the men face Granville Rage at Garside Park on Saturday night at 7pm. GO USYD!
