Two current, and one former, Sydney University Elite Athlete Program (EAP) scholarship holders have been selected in men’s and women’s Australian water polo squads for the 2012 London Olympics.

Lachlan Hollis and Hannah Buckling (B. Science), both current EAP scholarship holders, will be hoping for final selection for the London Olympics.

Training for five hours a day has paid off for Hollis, 22, who has been with the Sydney University Club for eight years, playing in the Australian National League and recently representing Australia in the World University Games in China.

Hollis said only 14 members of the squad would travel to London for the Olympics but being selected for the national squad was a thrill.

“This is a major bonus for all the long, hard hours of training but, if not London, I have set my long-term goal for Brazil in 2016.”

Buckling will get her experience with the Australian women’s senior team, something the Australian women’s senior coach Bronwen McFadden said she deserved after a stellar performance at the World Junior Championships.

“Hannah won rave reviews both from our coaches and the coaches of the other international teams for her performances at centre back in the World Junior Championships.”

“One statistic that stood out is that Hannah didn’t have one goal scored off her by a centre forward all tour.”

The squad also includes Sydney University’s Beijing Olympic team captain and former EAP scholarship holder Thomas Whalan.
