The Chemist Warehouse Australian Opals squad was this morning announced with three Brydens Sydney Uni Flames players included.

Alex Bunton, Alex Wilson and Tahlia Tupaea received the call up alongside 25 others, including members of Australia’s silver medal-winning 2018 FIBA World Cup team.

With Alex Bunton making her national team debut at this event, Wilson and Tupaea will be looking to make their first ever Opals team following an extensive training camp from April.

The Opals will meet on the Gold Coast from April 12-18 with a second camp to be held in Phoenix, Arizona from July 20-31. This will precede the Asia Cup team announcement in August.

Following a difficult year for the Flames in the Chemist Warehouse WNBL Championship, it is terrific to see three key members of the team recognised for their talent despite a injury-ridden season.

Bunton has been sidelined for the bulk of the season with a knee injury, while Tupaea was forced to take four weeks to recover from a concussion sustained in round three. Most recently, Alex Wilson was ruled out after dislocating her knee and undergoing surgery.

We look forward to seeing the girls in action with the Opals squad later this year. For a sneak peak, catch Tahlia and the Flames in action this Sunday against the University of Canberra Capitals at Qudos Bank Arena.

This morning’s announcement comes ahead of a big year of basketball with the 2019 FIBA women’s Asia Cup and the start of the FIBA women’s qualifiers for the 2020 Olympics and 2022 FIBA World Cup.
