Sydney University will host Randwick Petersham in the grand final of the 2021-22 Kingsgrove Sports Twenty20 Cricket Cup at University Oval this Sunday after accounting for Parramatta in their preliminary final last weekend.
The Students chased down Parramatta’s very competitive 6-191, finishing on 5-192 with a ball to spare. Liam Robertson tonked half a dozen sixes in his unbeaten 73 off 44 balls, while Nick Larkin (34), Damien Mortimer (30) and Charlie Dummer (30) made solid contributions. Parramatta opener Ryan Hackney top-scored with 88, and Luke Dempsey posted 41 to help set the testing target.
Sydney University finished on top of the Twenty20 Sydney Thunder Conference with 12.5 points from four wins and a draw in their competition matches. They then accounted for Blacktown Mounties with a nine-wicket win in their semi-final to make it to the preliminary final.
Randwick Petersham finished second behind Mosman on the Sydney Sixes Conference ladder. They earned a grand final berth with a semi-final with over St George before their six-wicket preliminary final win over UNSW at Coogee Oval on Sunday.
The news is not so good in the Belvidere Cup, NSW Cricket’s premier Sydney competition.
Saturday’s 38-run Limited Overs loss to St George saw Sydney University slump to 10th place on the ladder after 11 rounds.
St George opener Mark Stoneman took a liking to the University Oval wicket, cracking an unbeaten 111 as the visitors reached 6-253 off their 50 overs.
They then rattled the hosts for 215 off 46.3 overs to take the six points and fifth place on the competition ladder, which is headed by Northern District on 63 points. Mosman (60), Randwick-Petersham (55), Manly-Warringah (45), St George (42) and UNSW (38) make up the top six.
With six competition rounds to be played, including one two-day fixture, the Students will need a minor miracle to make the top six. This Saturday, they meet Western Suburbs in another Limited Overs match at Pratten Park.
Sydney University Second Grade are third behind Mosman and Sutherland; Third Grade are third behind Northern District and Bankstown; Fourth Grade are 7th on a ladder headed by Manly-Warringah; and Fifth Grade are 12th.on a ladder headed by Eastern Suburbs.
After Five round of the Poidevin-Gray (Under 21) Shield Sydney University are eighth on a ladder headed by Campbelltown-Camden. And after seven rounds of the A.W. Green Shield (Under 18), Sydney University are 17th on a ladder headed by St George.
Overall, Sydney University are 7th on the Club Championship, which is headed by Northern District.
The NSW Women’s Premier Cricket competition is headed by Sydney on 47 points after nine rounds. St George-Sutherland (43), Bankstown (38), Manly-Warringah (37), Penrith (35) and Campbelltown-Camden (31) make up the top six. Universities are in ninth place.
Universities Second Grade are fifth on the competition ladder behind Sydney, Northern District, Parramatta and Bankstown, with Penrith holding down sixth berth.
Universities Third Grade are ninth on a ladder headed by St George-Sutherland, while the Under 18 Brewer Shield side are 11th on a ladder headed by Sydney.
