The Wallaroos have made a dream start to their Women’s Rugby World Cup campaign, storming to a record 73-0 victory over Samoa in Salford. It was a performance brimming with attacking flair, defensive steel, and no storage of Sydney Uni talent.
Five representatives from Sydney University Football Club – Emily Chancellor, Arianna Talakai, Brianna Hoy, Bride O’Gorman and Piper Duck- all played their part in what is now Australia’s biggest ever win at the World Cup.
From the opening whistle, Australia set the tempo with relentless energy. Seven first-half tries established an unassailable lead, before four more after the break sealed an emphatic 11-try out. Samoa struggled to contain the Wallaroos’ pace and power, pinned deep in their own half as a wave of attack turned into points.
Emily Chancellor, named co-captain for the tournament alongside Kaitlan Leaney, led with authority in the back row, setting the standard at the breakdown. Talakai anchored the scrum and was a constant presence in contact, while Hoy’s mobility and ball carrying added punch around the park. O’Gorman delivered composure and control in the forward pack, whilst Duck, already a former national captain despite her youth, injected dynamism and urgency that typified the Wallaroos’ approach.
The result surpassed Australia’s previous World Cup record, a 62-0 win over Kazakhstan in 2010, and sent a clear message to the rest of the competition. With more formidable challengers to come, most notably a pool cash against the USA, the Wallaroos could not have asked for a stronger platform.
For Sydney Uni, the match was another reminder of its reputation as a breeding ground for international rugby. With a first-round win, the Wallaroos have made their intentions clear, and with five Uni stars in the mix, this World Cup Journey promises to be one worth following closely.
