Sydney University Rugby’s 2025 season came to a thrilling close with three sides contesting grand finals across the Colts and Grade competitions. The students walked away with silverware in the 3rd Colts Bill Simpson Shield, while the 2nd Colts and 3rd Grade sides were edged out in narrow and dramatic encounters.

3rd Colts – Bill Simpson Shield Champions

Sydney Uni 41 def. Randwick 10

Our 3rd Colts stamped their authority on the grand final stage with a commanding victory over Randwick at Coogee Oval.

From the first whistle, the students controlled the tempo, dominating at set pieces and executing with precision in attack. Backed by an organised defensive wall, Uni pulled away to seal a 41-10 win and secure the Bill Simpson Shield.

It was a fitting reward for a team that has shown consistency, hard work, and belief all season.

2nd Colts – Shell Trophy

Randwick 50 def. Sydney Uni 42

The Shell Trophy final was an attacking showcase of Colts Rugby, with Sydney Uni and Randwick producing a 92-point thriller.

The Students fought tooth and nail after being down 33 -7 at the break. A late intercept try sealed the deal for Randwick, who claimed the shield 50-42.

Despite the loss, our 2nd Colts demonstrated enormous talent, grit, and the ability to perform under pressure, marking them as players to watch in the years ahead.

3rd Grade- Henderson Shield

Eastern Suburbs 22 def. Sydney Uni 21

At Leichhardt Oval, our 3rd Grade team went down by the narrowest of margins in a nail-biting Henderson Shield Grand Final.

Looking for a battle of wills, Uni pushed East all the way. With a commanding 14-3 lead, the Beasties came home strong late, leaving the final score 22-21. It was a heartbreaking end, but our side showed immense resilience and pride in the jersey.

With three sides reaching the Grand Finals, Sydney Uni Rugby has once again proven the strength and depth of the program, from the empathic 3rd Colts victory to the fighting spirit of our 2nd Colts and 3rd Grade.

We are incredibly proud of all players, coaches, and supporters who have contributed to their journey. The future remains bright for Sydney Uni Rugby, and this weekend was a reminder of the club’s enduring spirit, tradition, and excellence.
