The 2025 New Balance University Basketball League (UBL) season has tipped off in electrifying fashion, and the University’s men’s and women’s teams have wasted no time making their mark. Across the first five rounds, the Lions have combined fast-paced offence with disciplined defence to deliver statement performances, putting themselves firmly in the conversation as early title contenders.
RD1 Vs Melbourne University
The campaign opened up with a challenging match-up against Melbourne University, a program known for its depth and intensity. Sydney Uni’s women’s team set the tone for the season with a confident 76-58 victory, powered by sharp shooting and clinical defence. Caitlyn Martin was instrumental, pacing the side with composure, earning her MVP honours.
The men’s side fell agonisingly short in their opener, edged 83-80 in a nail-biter. Despite the loss, Matt Wacher was a standout at both ends of the floor, his efforts setting the benchmark for the round to follow.
RD2 Vs Newcastle University
Momentum built quickly in Round 2 with both squads producing commanding wins over Newcastle University. The women’s team proved relentless, suffocating Newcastle’s attack to cruise to an 82 – 49 victory. Once again, Caitlyn Martin dictated play and collected her second straight MVP.
The men’s team secured their first win of the season, controlling the tempo to finish 93-83 ahead in a physical contest. Matt Wacher repeated as MVP, rewarded for his consistency.
RD3 Vs UNSW
The Sydney derby is always one of the most anticipated fixtures of the season, and this year’s clash did not disappoint. In front of a loud home crowd, Sydney Uni turned up the style.
The women’s team edged out UNSW 62-56 in a tense battle, showcasing real defensive grit and late-game execution. For the men, it was a more decisive performance, pulling away in the second half to secure an 81-66 win. Rising stars Ben Williams and Alex Oliver were named MVPs, highlighting the team’s growing depth and balance.
RD4 Vs UWA Maali
By Round 4, the Lions had built momentum, and it showed in their clash against UWA Maali. The women’s side delivered a clinical 79-46 performance, stifling Maali from start to finish. Yvette Volk was outstanding, earning MVP recognition.
The men’s team continued their winning ways with an 82-71 result. Robbie Moore dominated, leading the team to victory and earning MVP honours.
RD5 vs Curtin University
Sydney Uni closed the first block of fixtures with a dominant showing at home against Curtin University. The women’s side battled to a 68-57 win, maintaining their unbeaten record. Once again, Caitlyn Martin proved decisive, collecting her third MVP of the season.
The men’s team capped off the round with one of their best offensive performances of the year, outscoring Curtin 94-73 in a commanding display. Ben Williams was unstoppable, earning his second MVP award in three games.
Five rounds in, Sydney Uni Basketball is building something special in 2025. The women’s team remained unbeaten at 5-0, blending a defensive resilience with attacking flair. The men’s team, after a narrow opening-round loss, have rattled off four straight wins. As the competition heads into the middle stages, both Sydney Uni teams carry momentum for a strong finish.
