The University of Sydney concluded its inaugural UniSport Australia Div 1 Nationals campaign on the Gold Coast last week winning eight pennants, six silver and eight bronze medals.
Among these competition champions were the University’s Rowers, Men’s and Women’s; Men’s Baseball; Women’s Ultimate Frisbee, Kendo’s Men and Women, Women’s Football and Women’s Cycling.
Dominant across all events, Sydney University rowers won the men’s, women’s and overall competition. Sydney University entered 15 of the 16 events held, winning a total of 7 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze medals.
The team won the men’s eight to retain the Oxford and Cambridge Cup in its 122nd running to move to 41 wins, just one behind Melbourne University on the historical ladder.
They also won the mixed eight, men’s and women’s coxed pair, women’s lightweight quad, men’s lightweight single, plus silver in the women’s eight, men’s double and mixed coxed four.
Men’s Baseball had a flawless campaign to beat Griffith University in the final, 11-1, while Women’s Football dominated in their competition with a string of 10+ point wins, beating Melbourne University in the final, 3-1, to win their 8th consecutive pennant.
Kendo claimed the the Women’s, Men’s and Overall competition champions title, in addition to Women’s Cycling and Women’s Ultimate Frisbee.
On top of this, a number of teams produced standout performances to claim individual gold, second and third-place medals.
Gold-medal winners included Kane Townsend in the Men’s Table Tennis for singles, defeating his opponent 3-0. In Fencing, the Men’s Foil Team won gold, while in Swimming, Cormac Guthrie won gold in the Men’s 800m Freestyle.
Georgie Whitehouse also won gold in the 27km Indivdual Women’s Time Trial with a convincing one-minute lead, contributing to the University’s pennant in Women’s Cycling.
Teams that finished with silver (6) included Aussie Rules, Men’s Volleyball, Women’s Hockey, Men’s Rugby 7s, Men’s Ultimate Frisbee and Women’s Judo. Individual second-place finishes included Sarah Tan in the Women’s Singles for Table Tennis.
Bronze medal winners (8) included Mixed Touch Football, Men’s Water Polo, Women’s Futsal, Women’s Table Tennis, Women’s Badminton, Women’s Taekwondo, Men’s Fencing (3) and Men’s Tennis, plus in the swimming, the women’s and men’s relay teams took bronze in 4x50m Freestyle.
