Despite dominating their three-day intervarsity cricket match against Adelaide University, the University of Sydney have scrapped home by three wickets with just four overs remaining on the final day’s play.

After bowling out Adelaide University for 182 in the first innings and 195 in the second innings, and scoring 257 themselves on day two, the University of Sydney were set a score of 121 to win.

Under pressure to chase down the target in just 42 overs (Adelaide University could afford to draw as the current trophy holders, after winning in 2011 and the 2012 match ending up in a draw), Sydney Uni somewhat stumbled on a crumbling pitch and in the face of some controversial umpiring decisions.

Despite these obstacles and growing pressure, the away team reached the total seven wickets down and with four overs to play, thanks largely to composed knocks from Darius Visser (30) and wicketkeeper Alex Shaw (23 not out). Jonte Pattison’s 10 not out also helped the University of Sydney across the line.

Sydney University Cricket Club’s (SUCC) Director of Cricket and Head Coach Gary Whitaker was extremely pleased with the result and the attitude of his players over in Adelaide.

“This was a very good win, built on the back of some excellent character shown by all of the boys,” said Whitaker.

Early in the week, Adelaide University won the toss and elected to bat. Excellent bowling from Liam Robertson (5-37) and David Miller (4-44) restricted their total to just 182. After some aggressive batting Sydney Uni finished the first day on 2-107 with Darius Visser (48) and James Larkin (38) the not out batsman at stumps.

After compiling 257, thanks largely to contributions from Visser (76) and Larkin (46), Sydney Uni had Adelaide on the back foot, and they rammed home there advantage through to stumps as the hosts finished the day at 7-77.

Some fine late order batting saw Adelaide Uni reach 182. Miller was once again the stand out bowler taking 5-44 to go with his 4-44 in the first innings. Set 121 for victory, Sydney Uni dug deep and showed some tremendous composure to reach the target in the dying overs and win back the intervarsity trophy.
