The weather played a major role in our annual 3 day battle against Melbourne. This time Melbourne travelled north and with the first day and a half washed out, improvisation was needed. A 20/20 game was played on Wednesday afternoon with Melbourne winning the toss and batting. They were progressing steadily to 3-80 off 12 overs before Paul Bertelle picked up 3 quick wickets to help the Sydney boys break through and eventually bowl Melbourne out for 115. Nick and Ben Larking opened and quickly put pay to the total, Sydney eventually passing the total 3 down, Nick picking up a quick fire 60.

Day 3 (technically Day 2) saw what was to be a 50 over match turn into a 40 over match when the Melbourne boys finally turned up! This time captain Hay won the toss and didn’t hesitate batting. With the sun baking down and the Melbourne boys on the back of 4 tough nights in Sydney, the attack was pummelled to all parts of the field. Sydney finally turning in a score of 8-285 from their 50 overs. Solid contributions from Ben Larkin (50), James Walsh (39), Aaron Hickey (61) Matt Morgan (45) helped shape the Uni score. The bowling again was too much for the Melbourne boys, with Charles Cull (2-33) and Nigel Cowell (5-30) really putting them to the sword. Nigel claimed a hat-trick in his 5 wicket haul, sending the stumps cartwheel-ling twice and another with a very sore toe!

Sydney Uni continued their domination of this event, winning both games and are looking forward to Adelaide University next week. Captain Will Hay is leading the group again and with a new mix of players it is certainly going to be a challenging experience for them. However some key players have emerged with Rich Berrington (represents Scotland) and Mark Hackett (former 2nd grade player from Perth) will add some experience into this team.
