Sydney Uni’s women’s touch football team have been promoted to UniSport Australia’s Nationals Div 1 after winning gold in the Div 2 final against University of Sunshine Coast.
Sydney Uni went through undefeated (5W, 1D) in the group stage to secure first place, scoring 53 tries while conceding just nine.
A mammoth 19-1 win over the University of Wollongong in the final pool game laid the platform for a successful finals run, trouncing Charles Sturt University 9-0 in the semi-final before taking care of USC with a 5-2 win in the final.
The promotion means the women’s team will now compete at the Div 1 Nationals in September.
The men’s touch football side came within inches of promotion but narrowly fell short by one competition point in the group stage behind Avondale College of Higher Education, who beat them 8-7 in the semi-final, in third place.
They still walked away with some silverware, claiming bronze with a 7-6 triumph over cross-town rivals UTS.
