Sydney University have leaped to the top of the Sydney Women’s AFL ladder after a close fought 15 point victory over the UNSW Stingrays on Saturday at Village Green, Kensington.
Trailing by 5 points at half-time, the Sydney Uni Bombers pulled ahead in the third quarter to secure a 5.6-36 to 3.3-21 win.
The day was especially memorable for Bombers star Emma Yuen, who celebrated the victory in her 100th game for the club. Despite not having played during the last two seasons, Yuen is one of the most skilful players in the competition and her list of achievements is nearly endless.
She has received two annual players’ player awards, a best and fairest, a premiership, has represented NSW and was also chosen in 2010 Sydney Women’s AFL Team of the Decade. Yuen was also the best on ground in the 2007 Grand Final, the last time Sydney Uni won a grand final.
With just two rounds to go before the finals series – against the Newtown Breakaways and the Balmain Dockers – the Bombers are in pole position to take out the minor premiership.
This weekend Sydney Uni take on the Breakaways at 2pm on Saturday at St Pauls Oval, The University of Sydney.
