Sydney University Swimming Club came away from the NSW Open Championships at the weekend with two gold and five bronze medals from the 30 athletes representing the club.

The depth of talent in the club was evidenced in the relay performances where SUSC won gold in both the men’s 4×100 medley and 4×100 freestyle relays and backed those up with four bronze medal performances in the 4×100 mixed medley, the women’s 4×100 medley, the men’s 4×200 freestyle and the B team in the men’s 4×100 medley.

The men’s gold medal 4×100 medley team included Jack WilsonJuri DijkstraEdward Marks and James Koch, and the men’s 4×100 gold medal freestyle team included James KochThomas HayRyan Wilkes, and Jack Wilson.

SUSC’s A-Team of Thomas Hay, Ryan Wilkes, James Koch, and Jack Wilson were the first team to touch the wall, but unfortunately, they were disqualified for a small (0.09) change over indiscretion bumping the B team up from 4th into the bronze position.

Individually, 19-year-old Ryan Wilkes, a Sydney Uni Sport and Fitness Elite Athlete Program member, was the standout, taking the bronze medal in the men’s 200m freestyle and 4th place in the 400m freestyle against fields full of Tokyo Olympians.

SUSC head coach Paul Bruce said the team is now looking forward to the Australian Championships in May that will double as the Australian Trials for World Championships, Commonwealth Games, and the World University Games later in the year.
