Sydney Uni Swim Club’s Jono Newton, Matt Abood and Matt Jaukovic swam alongside Olympians Stephanie Rice, Nick D’Arcy, Brenton Rickard, Jessicah Schipper, Leisel Jones and Geoff Huegill at the NSW State Open Championships, which was held 12-14 February.

The meet was the last major competition before the Commonwealth Games selection in March.

Sydney Uni was represented by a strong team of 20 athletes.  Coach Steve Alderman was happy with his swimmers’ progress and felt they put in many strong performances.

13 year old Nomiki Lau was the first Sydney Uni Swimmer to contest the multi-class events.

The three day meet produced some very impressive performances, demonstrating that Sydney Uni was up to the task – with scholarship holders Matt Abood, Jono Newton and Kate Johnson represented Sydney Uni in the finals.

Abood finished 4th in the 50m freestyle and 8th in the 100m freestyle, while Newton finished 7th in the 50m freestyle and 9th in the 50m butterfly (an event he has not swum for 2 years). Johnson finished a creditable 9th in the 200m butterfly.

Sydney Uni’s 4 x 100m freestyle Men’s relay team, consisting of Zane Jordan, Sam McConnell, Matt Abood and Gordon Willis finished with a podium result in 3rd place.
