Riders from the NSWIS-Sydney Uni Women’s Road Cycling Team are in a strong position after Day 1 of the Tour of King Valley.

One of the few elite team to field a full roster of five riders for the stage race,  NSWIS–Sydney Uni (NSU) conserved their energy during the first stage time trial over 9km with Ash Ankudinoff finishing in 4th place, just 15 seconds behind the fastest time set by Specialized rider Kate Perry.

NSU rider Georgia Whitehouse finished 6th, a further 14 seconds off the pace.  Sydney Uni architecture student Ella Bloor, riding for the Specialized team, came in 14th at 52 seconds behind the leader.

But the real story of the day come in the second race, being the first road stage of the series.  In the words of NSU team member (and Uni graduate) Gina Ricardo, Georgie Whitehouse (current Sydney Uni student) “went for a solo lap flyer on the last lap”.  And won, beating the bunch sprint with the first 35 riders separated by only 15 seconds.  Ash Ankudinoff finished in the same time as Georgie in 5th place.

As a result, after the first two stages, NSWIS-Sydney Uni is looking to dominate the final podium and jerseys.  Georgie Whitehouse is in 2nd place on General Classification (being the combined elapsed time of both races so far), just three seconds behind the current first place rider from Specialized.  Ash Ankudinoff is in third, just one further second behind.

After the 2 stages, Georgie is in the green Sprint Queen classification jersey with 17 points.

The team will be looking to consolidate this great start to the series tomorrow when racing resumes near Wangaratta in Victoria with Stage 3 over 115km, with the 4th stage to take place on Sunday over 100km.
