Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness (SUSF) has launched a new identity at the beginning of the new academic year, in a bold assault on the increasingly competitive sport and fitness industry.

Spearheaded by a new logo and signage representing a modern view of the Sydney University Lion, the new identity includes an interactive website and comprehensive membership packages to suit any budget, timetable and fitness level.

Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness Executive Director, Mr Robert Smithies, commented on the changes. “This is an exciting new chapter for one of the leading sporting bodies in Australia. We invite anyone in the university and wider community to see for themselves – they will be impressed at what they receive when they join Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness.”

Deputy Director, Dr Michelle Nancarrow, said, “I challenge anyone to beat the incredible facilities, programs and impressive range of clubs and recreation courses at SUSF. We cater for sport and fitness across the spectrum, with everything from an Elite Athlete program and Olympic gold medallists to belly-dancing classes, a seniors program and school holiday camps for kids.”

The new-look SUSF addresses head-on the additional financial pressures placed on the organisation with the Howard government’s introduction of Voluntary Student Unionism legislation in 2006.

“The VSU effectively cost us $3.2 million annually and making up that shortfall will be the big challenge … in the years to come,” according to Mr Greg Harris, former Executive Director and leader of the anti-VSU lobby group.

Much of the impetus for the changes at SUSF can be attributed to the work of Mr Harris, a dedicated sportsman, who served as Executive Director for 16 years.

Commenting on Mr Harris’ contribution, Mr Smithies said, “He (Greg Harris) has driven this development and he would be thrilled to see new SUSF members of any age enjoying all that we have to offer.”

“We have greatly appreciated the wholehearted support and assistance of Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gavin Brown, and the University as a whole, particularly during the testing times post-VSU,” said Mr Smithies.

“Ours is a wonderful story of cooperation, diligence, achievement and success – we are immensely proud of our place in Australia’s sporting future as well as being a key player in its impressive history,” he said.

The new website address was launched Tuesday 19th February – www.susf.com.au.
