This Friday Sydney Uni’s men’s handball team will head to Qatar to compete in consecutive IHF Super Globe tournaments.

Sydney Uni earned their spot in Qatar after defeating Auckland in two home and away matches in May, in the process being crowned Oceania champions.

The Super Globe is the annual men’s handball tournament where the best club teams from around the world compete to be crowned world club champions.

At last year’s Super Globe Sydney Uni suffered four losses, including one against the 2011 champions THW Kiel, a team that spends $14 million per year on player wages. Despite the losses Sydney Uni were extremely competitive and proved their worth at the Super Globe, stepping up to the speed and pressure of international club fixtures.

The 2013 competition begins this Sunday, with Sydney Uni taking on host Al-Sadd. They then play matches against European Champions League winner HSV Hamburg and wild card team El Jaish of Qatar.

In other handball news, Sydney Uni’s women’s team take on UTS in the NSW League Final at 9am at Sydney Olympic Park Sports Hall.
