Sydney Uni Handball Club will compete for the World Cup at their fourth IHF Super Globe in Doha from 7 to 10 September.

Sydney Uni have dominated the handball scene for the last few years, winning four consecutive Australian and Oceanic titles, and are hoping to continue their success at the IHF Super Globe in Doha, the official club World Cup.

In 2014 Sydney Uni lost only narrowly to Qatar club Al Ahli (24:25), levelling with powerhouse FC Barcelona through the first half of their meeting.

As the only amateur team travelling to Qatar, the squad will be competing with teams like FC Barcelona (European Champions League winner), Fuchse Berlin (EHF Cup winner), Club Africain Tunis (African Champions), Taubate (Brazil, Panamarican champions).

In the squad of German coach Philipp Enders there are players from seven different nations, four of which are French.

Big name Brazilian transfer, Renato Tupan Rui, will bring valuable experience to the side. Signed with Sydney Uni HC as of 1 August, Renato is a 306 time Brazilian international, who participated in 2 Olympic games (Athens and Beijing) and 7 World Cups.

For now, the biggest goal for the students is a win, and the club has been working hard to develop talent and raise the profile of handball across Australia. Sydney Uni Mens recently defended their NSW title, beating their second team in the final for the first time ever, a result of having almost doubled participation numbers and being able to enter two strong teams. Sydney Uni Womens also won the NSW League over UTS.

Their first game will be tonight (Monday 7 September) at 8pm (live on BeIN Sport on Tuesday at 3am AEST, or available via live streaming on Qatar’s Al Kass: http://shoof.alkass.net/shoof/live/live_2.php

We wish the team all the best in their Super Globe campaign!
