Sydney University Handball has set a new milestone, with the men’s team claiming the national title and securing qualifications for a record 13th World Club Championship appearance, further cementing their standing as one of Australia’s most decorated handball programs.

The men entered the tournament in dominant form, going underdefeated through the group stage with commanding victories over St Kilda (32-21), Gold Coast (27-15), and UNSW (41-19).

A semi-final against UTS followed. Despite an energetic start from their opponents, Sydney Uni’s experience proved the difference, pulling away to win 34-19 and book a place in their 15th consecutive national final.

The final against Canberra was tightly contested early, with Sydney Uni holding a slender 9-8 lead after the opening 20 minutes.Canberra pushed hard and had the crowd behind them, but Sydney Uni’s composure under pressure told as the match wore on. A dominant second half saw the Blue and Gold surge clear, winning 40-22 to claim another national championship.

The victory also confirmed qualification for this September’s World Club Championship in Egypt, a record 13th appearance for the club on the international stage.

On the women’s side, the squad navigated one of the tournament’s toughest schedules, playing six matches across four days after an opening bye. Wins over UNSW and Canberra, a narrow defeat to UTS, and the most competitive performance against eventual champions University of Queensland earning the team a well-deserved bronze medal.

Attention now turns to Egypt, where the men’s squad will represent Sydney University against the world’s best clubs, carrying with them a record that speaks for itself.
