Playing their fourth game in eight days across three countries, the Sydney University Football Club (SUFC) has been defeated 38-17 by Cambridge University at Grange Rd.
Playing in their fourth game of the 2013 Sesquicentennial Grand Slam Tour of the UK and Ireland on Monday evening (UK time), the Students took a 3-0 lead thanks to Byron Hodge’s boot.
Cambridge replied enthusiastically with a penalty of their own, and then the binning of Andrew Smith provided Sydney Uni with the opportunity to add points. However it was the local students that rallied and only try savers by Aldy King and then half Richie Draper kept them out.
When Cambridge became 15 again they began to dominate upfront and went into the sheds at half-time with a 24-3 lead.
In much more even fought contest in the second half – which the Students drew 17 all – the Students scored two tries. Stu Dunbar and Dane McCarthy scored five-pointers.
Two days earlier, on Saturday afternoon, Sydney University registered their second win of the tour when they defeated Cardiff University Rugby Club 48-0.
Played on the hallowed ground of Cardiff Arms Park next to Millennium Stadium, the Students played some swift open running rugby with great interchange between forwards and backs.
Leading 19-0 at the break, the Students proved to be too powerful in the second half, battering the Welsh to record a 48-0 victory.
The tourist’s next match is against a Edinburgh Academicals team tomorrow evening (UK time).
