The University of Sydney has cemented its dominance of Australian university tennis, winning the 2026 University Tennis League Championship and securing its third consecutive title.
Sydney Uni Sport defeated UQ Sport 5-4 in a thrilling Grand Final at Blacktown Tennis Centre Stanhope on Thursday. The narrow victory completed a remarkable three-peat for Sydney Uni Tennis, which won the inaugural competition in 2024 before successfully defending their crown in 2025.
The result capped three days of competition featuring six of Australia’s leading university tennis teams. The University Of Sydney entered the Finals as the top seed and once again delivered under pressure, overcoming a strong University of Queensland side in a championship contest decided by the finest of margins.
Sydney Uni was joined by the University of Western Australia, the University of Queensland, Monash University, Deakin University and Adelaide University in the six-team field.
The teams were seeded by UniSport Australia and Tennis Australia according to the average Universal Tennis Rating of their six highest-rated players. Each team comprised three men and three women competing across singles and doubles in a mixed-team format.
Now in its third year, the University Tennis League provides university players from across Australia with an opportunity to represent their institutions in national competition. It’s mixed- team format highlights both individuals skill and collective strength, with every singles and doubles result contributing to the final outcome.
Sydney Uni began the week attempting to achieve something no other team had done in the young competition’s history: win three consecutive championships.
After claiming the first University Tennis League title in 2024 and successfully defending it the following year, the team entered the 2026 Finals carrying both the top seed and the expectation that accompanied an unbeaten championship record.
Its dramatic 5-4 Grand Final victory ensured that record remained intact.
The achievement establishes Sydney Uni as the competition’s first three-time champion and completes an extraordinary opening chapter in the history of the University Tennis League.
