Sydney University has dominated the competition for University Athlete of the Year, with more finalists named than any other university in this year’s Australian University Sports (AUS) Awards.

Out of the 5 Sydney Uni nominees there were two winners; Susan Pratley (Netball) won ‘Most Outstanding Sporting Achievement’ and Taniele Gofers (Waterpolo) won Female Athlete of the Year.’

The annual awards distinguish the many outstanding performances and contributions recorded from Australian student athletes participating in university sport throughout the world each year.

They are run by Australian University Sport, the nation’s peak governing body of university sport, representing more than 42 member organisations and one million students.

Winners in the six categories as well as the overall University Athlete of the Year were named on Monday night (May 18) at a dinner event.

AUS Chief Executive Officer, Don Knapp said that the selection committee had to make some tough decisions when choosing the finalists in each category.

“The standard of candidates for this year’s awards was extremely high. We have some amazing athletes in the Australian university sporting system at the moment and choosing the best of the best was extremely difficult.”

The University of Sydney had a finalist in every category.
