Solid top order partnerships from Sydney Women’s Cricket Club openers paved the way for First and Second grade wins over Universities in the first round of the 2020-21 NSW Women’s Premier competition on Sunday.
Twenty20 was the format for the first round and Sydney openers Kate Barry (47) and Naomi McDonald (22) set the scene from the first over getting their side off to a good start on their way to 6-123 at David Phillips Fields.
Sydney’s bowlers backed up their willow wielders to restrict Universities to 93 for the loss of two wickets in their 20-over reply.
Openers Erica James (38) and Zoe Benjamin (32) put on a 71-run stand but were shackled by some tight bowling from Sydney, with Gizelle Plummer (1-10) the standout.
Sydney’s Second Grade openers Samira Dimeglio (51 not out) and Shannon Webb (24 not out) posted an 87-run partnership for a 10-wicket win over Sydney University, who managed 7-86 off their 20 overs.
Frankie Nicklin (33) and Taylah Withers (20) scored the bulk of Universities’ runs, while Jessica Hean (3-2) and Samira Dimeglio (2-24) were the pick of the Sydney bowlers.
Universities will meet Bankstown in a Round 2 clash at Bankstown Oval next Sunday.
