Twelve Sydney Uni swimmers competed with distinction at the recent NSW State Open Short Course Championships, finishing 3rd in the overall pointscore.

The small, but talented SUSC Team responded to the intense competition with 4 Gold and 3 Bronze medals. Coach, Stephen Alderman explained the most pleasing aspect of the meet was that 8 of the 12 swimmers made finals in their respective events.

Matt Jaukovic finished the Championships with 2 gold medals in the 50 metre Butterfly in 23.00sec and the 100 metre Butterfly in 51.61 sec setting a new Metropolitan record in both events. Johnathon Newton, who narrowly missed Olympic selection, won gold in the Men’s 50metre Freestyle in 22.32.

Sydney Uni Sport and Fitness scholarship holder, Kate Johnson, finished with a bronze medal in the 100 metre Butterfly in 1:03.12.

The Men’s Freestyle relay team of Jonathon Newton, Sam McConnell, Matt Jaukovic and Gordon Willis won gold whilst the Men’s Medley relay of David Wise, Alistaire Pickles, Matt Jaukovic and Gordon Willis finished 3rd. The Girl’s team of Emma Gray, Kate Johnson, Taylor Aitken and Angela Hurley finished a creditable 3rd.

The youngest team members, Sam McConnell, Emma Gray and James Etter swam creditably finishing in the top 10 for their pet events. The future of the Sydney Uni Swimming Club is in good hands with these talented swimmers in their first year of study at Sydney University. They are just out of the junior competitive ranks and have promising futures in the sport of swimming at Open level.
