Sydney University Swimming Club had some dominant performers at the January 2011 State Age (13-18 years) and State Junior (10 and under to 12 years) championships.

Megan Ramsay, Huon Fairbairn, Christine Kidd, Inez Osland and Paige Burland all swam at State Age.

Ramsay had a fantastic meet making six finals, receiving gold in the 200m individual medley and silver in the 400m individual medley.

Angelique Barrett, Lewis Blackburn, Joe Howe, Justin Malkki, Lauren McDougall and Molly McGrath swam at the State Junior championships.

McDougall and McGrath performed well at their first major meet, while Blackburn made the finals in the 100m backstrokes, finishing in a solid 8th place.

The grand finale of the evening at State Age was the 10x50m relay, where Sydney University was represented by women’s and men’s teams.

The women’s team achieved their best result ever in this event, finishing 6th overall.

The highlight of the evening was the men’s team, who led from the start – with Jono Newton swimming the first leg -all the way through to Gordo Willis who led the way home as the anchor person (Matt Jaukovic swimming butterfly messed with their competitors’ mind set).

The team wom gold and was the only team to break the four-minute barrier.

Sydney University swimmers now turn their attention to the State Open Championships to be held next weekend, a lead up meet to the April National Championships in Adelaide.
