Highlights from the year that was…

AFL

After finishing minor premiers, three Sydney University Women’s AFL Bombers were selected by Greater Western Sydney (GWS) in the inaugural AFL Women’s Draft. Nicola Barr created history as No. 1 Pick Overall; Erin McKinnon & Stephanie Walker were also selected by GWS for the 2017 launch of the first ever AFL Women’s League.
 

Athletics

Among a list of achievements making them the most successful senior athletics club in Australia, Sydney University Athletic Club claimed Summer and Winter Premierships and were crowned Australian University Games Champions.
 

Baseball

Sydney University Baseball Club won two Championships when both their 3rd and 4th Grade sides won Grand Finals on Saturday, September 3, 2016.

Cricket

Sydney University Cricket Club won the 2015-16 Third and Fourth grade titles in the premier Sydney men’s competition. Tom Decent cracked 119 to help Third Grade secure a first innings win over Eastern Suburbs for the Mitchell Cup, while centuries from Matthew Powys (109) and Hayden Kerr (106) helped Fourths to the Reid Cup.

In the premier Sydney women’s competition Universities won the (Under 17) Brewer Shield with a nine-wicket win over Northern District.

Gridiron 

Sydney University Lions scored a touchdown in the final minute of play to win a 14th consecutive Gridiron NSW Division title in the grand final played at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday, December 3, 2016. 

Hockey

Sydney University Metro League Three were crowned Premiers after winning their Sydney Women’s Hockey League grand final on Sunday, September 18, 2016. The Metro League Four team went down to UNSW in their grand final.
 

Olympics

Record-breaking representation. Our 33 representatives, 27 for the Olympics and 6 for the Paralympics set a new Games-participation record for the University of Sydney. 
 

Rugby

Sydney Uni Women’s Rugby Club won back-to-back Premierships, beating Parramatta 25-24 in the Grand Final on Saturday, August 6, 2016.

Sydney Uni Football Club won an impressive 5 out 7 grand finals contested.

Sailing

SUSF Elite Athlete program member, Alice Tarnawski, is now a World University Champion sailor as a member of the women’s crew that took gold in the 8th World University Sailing Championship held in Perth, late September, 2016.

Soccer

Sydney University Soccer Football Club Women’s First Grade team swept all before them in achieving a rare triple. The team competing in the Women’s PS4 National Premier League 1 were crowned 2016 Premiers and then won the Championship on top of being Club Champions with our U17s and PS4 Reserves.

Water Polo

Sydney University women’s side made history winning the Club’s first ever National Water Polo League women’s title. They came from behind to claim a 12-8 victory over 2015 champions the Brisbane Barracudas.

Sydney Uni Men took out the Southern Cross Trophy for winning the 2015/16 minor premiership and finished a creditable third in the finals series.
