A team from Sydney University Swimming Club competed at the NSW State Short Course Championships held at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre from 25 to 27 August.
A highly competitive field from across the state were in attendance at the meet.
After podium finishes at the national long course championships, Sam Hohne showed he was able to shine in the shorter pool length events. He was third in both the 100 and 200 butterfly, fifth in 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke and sixth in the 200 backstroke.
Scarlett Deas was a finalist in the 200 breastroke, placing in ninth position. She also finished 14th in the 100 metre event.
Many other swimmers posted new personal best times including Tess Atutahi (100 backstroke) Kent Holyoake-Caceda (200 Breastroke), Finn Purcell (100 backstroke) and Matthew Taper (100 back and 50 free). The 16 years and over men’s medley relay also bettered their entry time. Many of the competitors finished in the top 20 in the state in their event.
Swimming club coach Brendan Micallef has been motivating the athletes to be the best that they can be. His efforts are acknowledged and appreciated by all the swimmers.
Our younger swimmers will compete at the 12 and Under State Championships on 9 and 10 September. We wish Ella Schuett, Jack Kerves, Jaiden Marshall, Mitchell Chen and Zac Izzard all the best as they represent the Blue and Gold.
