Three Sydney Uni Boat Club representatives have contributed to Australia’s medal haul at the World Rowing Cup II in Lucerne.
SUBC powerhouses Cameron Girdlestone and Sasha Belonogoff made up half of the Men’s Quadruple Sculls gold medal winning crew in seats 3 and 2.
Coming into the A-finals as the fastest qualifying crew and 2015 World Rowing Championship Silver medallists, Australia paced their way through the field to ultimately face-off against a strong Great Britain boat.
Coached by John Driessen, the Aussies managed to push past the British at the 1500 metre mark in a sprint to the end.
The final medal of the meet came from new doubles partners, Sally Kehoe of SUBC and Genevieve Horton. With a stroke rate of 34, the girls fired out in their first International A-Final together.
In a quality battle, the final 500 metres saw the 2013 World Champion Lithuanians, Donata Vistartaite and Milda Valciukaite, overtake to grab gold. Australia finished with silver and bronze went to Greece.
“It went so quickly; we’re rowing a new combination so we learn every time we are on the water. We may have over-paced a little bit, we’ve some time now so we’ll work this out,” Kehoe told Rowing Australia.
Australia now sits in third place on the medal table ahead of World Rowing Cup 3 in Poznan next month.
