In 2017 Sydney University Athletics Club successfully launched Target Tokyo, an ambitious four year program to send as many athletes as possible to the 2020 Olympic Games through securing a European training base and providing elite competition opportunities. 

Target Tokyo 2018 has begun with ten SUAC athletes currently overseas training and competing.

Shot putter, Aiden Harvey produced fantastic results at the IAAF World U20 Championships in Finland. Harvey placed seventh in the world, throwing 19.85m (personal best throw) in the final and as a result became the number two Australian junior of all time.

New SUSF Elite Athlete Program member, Lachlan Raper also competed in the IAAF World U20s. Racing in the 800m, Lachlan placed seventh in his heat with a time of 1.50.23.

In preparation for the Junior World Championships, both competed in the Mannheim Bauhaus Juniorengala competition in Germany. Aiden placed third, throwing 19.42m and Lachlan also placed third with a time of 1.50.36.

Meanwhile, Madeline Hills produced a formidable result in the Kortrijk Guldensporenmeeting in Belgium. Hills placed 5th in the final, running a time of 4.11.31.

Joshua Ralph has recorded a number of fantastic results across the European Summer season. Competing in the 800m, Ralph placed second at the Bern Citius Meeting in Switzerland, first in the Kuortane Motonet GP in Finland and first in the Lignano Sabbiadoro Meeting in Italy with a quick time of 1.46.68.

Nicola McDermott has had success on the international stage recently, placing second in the high jump at the Bühl Hochsprung Meeting in Germany, jumping 1.90m. She placed eight at the Sollentuna Folksam GP in Sweden and most recently, came first in the Viersen Internationales Hochsprung Meeting in Germany, with a height of 1.88m.

In the 100m Hurdles, Liz Clay competed at the La Chaux-de-Fonds Résisprint International in Switzerland, finishing in sixth place in 13.94. She also ran at the Kortrijk Guldensporenmeeting in Belgium, where she finished in fifth.

Marina Carrier competed in the Modern Pentathlon at the International Polish Open Championships in early June. Carrier finished in third place, recording PB’s in a couple of disciplines. She also competed in the International Open German Championships late last month. Against a strong field, Carrier finished 29th.

Closer to home in the 2018 NSW Short Course Cross Country Championships, Sydney University Athletics Club members dominated the Women’s race. In the Open 7500m, Paige Campbell placed first with a time of 26.16. Lara Hamilton was second in 26.58, Holly Campbell finished fourth, Beth croft placed fifth and rounding out the top ten, June Bakken Hodt and Ane Backen Hodt placed eighth and ninth respectively.

In the Men’s Open 7500m Russell Dessaix-Chin was Sydney University’s best, placing ninth in a time of 23.55. Joe Burgess was tenth in 24.07, with Martin Cooper (24.26) and Dylan McCuaig-Walton placing twelth and thirteenth.
