The Sydney Uni Athletics Club (SUAC) is in a virtually impregnable position after dominating the second last round of the Club Premiership at Homebush over the weekend.

SUAC sits nearly 800 points ahead of its nearest rival, with the stand-out once again youngster Nick Hough who ran second in the 110m hurdles.

Hough finished in front of SUAC’s three time national hurdles champion Justin Merlino, by three one-hundredths of a second, recording the fourth fastest time ever by a junior athlete in this event. It was only the second time that Hough has competed at the senior height. He then went onto win the 100m later in the afternoon in a slick time of 10.62, where Merlino finished seventh.

Also in the men’s 100m, Piyush Kumar finished fourth in a time of 10.87 bettering the National Masters record in the 30-34 age category. In the men’s 1500m Ben Liddy finished fourth.

Andrew Giltrap was the club’s rock in the field events finishing second in both the hammer throw and shot put. Matt Mountford also put his hand up in the field with a third place finish in the hammer throw.

On the women’s side of equation Charlotte Van Veenendaal continued her awesome season for the club, winning both the 100m (12.06) and the 400m (54.59). Also in the 100m Annie Rubie ran fourth in a time of 12.16, which was her first completed 100m race since she tore a hamstring significantly last season. Also in the women’s 400m Lizzie Jenkins ran seventh but posted her fastest time (56.88) at the distance in three years.

In the women’s 1500m SUAC’s Melinda Witchard finished second (4.34), with Eliza Barton (4.35) close behind to take third. In the women’s 5000m Milly Clark posted an easy victory running a reasonable time of 16.41, considering the oppressive humid conditions.

The final round of the club premiership will held this weekend at Homebush, with SUAC holding a commanding lead in the Open Pennant.
