Sydney University Football Club provided eight players for Australian franchises in the opening round of the Super 14 competition along with four players in the Junior Waratahs.
Phil Waugh captained NSW to a last minute 30-28 win over Queensland Reds at Suncorp Stadium. Also in the starting side from SUFC were flanker Dean Mumm, second-rower Will Caldwell and halfback Luke Burgess, while five-eighth Daniel Halangahu came off the bench late in the game to guide the Waratahs to victory.
Caldwell was in the wars throughout the match, finishing with 26 stitches in facial would and teeth marks in finger, while Mumm has been suspended for two matches after being charged with barging into a ruck.
Mumm will miss the Waratahs’ three-match tour to South Africa, but that has opened the way for SUFC team-mate Dave Dennis to be brought into the squad. Sydney University winger Peter Betham is also expected to be selected for the South African tour.
The Waratahs representatives were up against SUFC team-mate Laurie Weeks, who played with aplomb at tighthead for Queensland.
Meanwhile, flanker Ben McCalman and centre Mitch Inman came off the bench in their Super 14 debuts for the Western Force in their 24-15 loss to the ACT Brumbies in Perth.
And Betham, Dennis, hooker Ben Roberts and prop Jeremy Tilse represented the Junior Waratahs in their 40-10 win over the Brumbies Runners. Sydney University also had a strong contingent on the bench for the Junior Waratahs in Sam Robertson, Paddy Ryan, Eddie Bredenhann, Alex Rokobaro and Jacob Woodhouse.
