Sydney University are still searching for their first win of the 2008 NSW Super League season after going down 3-0 to St George at Belmore Sports Ground on Saturday night.

After having last week’s fixture against Central Coast rained out, Uni were raring to go in a match that had the potential to kickstart their season.

In an even first half, neither side was able to break the deadlock, with Aaron Kidd coming closest for Uni with a shot that skidded just wide, and St.George hitting the crossbar. The game was there for the taking as the teams headed to the sheds 0-0.

After halftime it was all St.George, however, as goals to Goran Pepovski and former Uni player Matthew Demetriou, alongside an own goal from the Students, gave the Saints a comfortable Round 5 victory.

Sydney Uni coach Bruce Tilt was upbeat after the match, despite the Students remaining winless in 2008. “We were quite happy with ourselves. No-one likes to lose games. We didn’t find the back of net with the chances we had, but there were chances at both ends. They took theirs, we didn’t take ours,” he said.

“Both sides put together good options to open the game up and the score could have ended up anything. I feel we’re developing slowly and getting players in scoring positions. I’m happy we’re moving along, I’m just not happy with the results. Our position doesn’t worry me. St George were bottom of the table after three rounds last year and they made the semi-finals.”

Uni have the chance to register their first win of the season midweek when they take on Mounties SC in the second round of the Tiger Turf Cup, the “FA Cup” of NSW Football that sees clubs from the NSW Premier, Super, Division 1 and Conference Leagues as well as local Association men’s teams compete in a knockout competition. As a Super League club Sydney Uni enter the competition in the second round, in a rescheduled encounter that was washed out last week.

The draw has not been kind for the cup, with the winner of this week’s match facing NSW Premier League giants Marconi, at Marconi Stadium, in the third round.

This Sunday the Students play the first match of what will be a tough stretch for the Uni side, playing host to the third placed Northern Tigers, before facing top side Liverpool and fifth placed Parramatta away. Kick-off is at 3pm this Sunday, Uni Oval.
