The 27-run win over Penrith in a 50-over fixture at Howell Oval on Saturday consolidated Sydney University’s chances of retaining the Limited Overs Cup and the two-day title (Belvidere Cup) for 2011-12.

The Students head the Limited Overs competition with one round to play, having won seven of their eight 50-over fixtures. The top six also includes Manly-Warringah, Fairfield-Liverpool, Eastern Suburbs, UNSW and Northern District.

Sydney University are second behind UNSW on the Belvidere Cup ladder, with Manly-Warringah. Eastern Suburbs, North Sydney and Fairfield-Liverpool making up the top six with five rounds to play.

While Sydney University dipped out of the race to retain the Poidevin-Gray Shield, they have made the Twenty20 final and will do battle with Randwick-Petersham on January 26 to determine the 2011-12 winner.

In the lower grades, Sydney University Seconds are well-placed in third position behind Northern District and Manly-Warringah, Third Grade are struggling in 16th position on a ladder headed by Western Suburbs, Fourth Grade head the competition seven points clear of second-placed Sutherland, and Fifth Grade sit ninth on the ladder headed by Gordon.

The Students need a strong finish across the grades to peg back Manly-Warringah (1139 points), Sutherland (1040) and St George (958) in the Club Championship.

Sydney University also lead the Metropolitan Cup, seven points clear of second-placed Gordon.

Saturday’s First Grade win over Penrith could be termed the Ian Moran Show. The all-rounder opened the innings and was run out for 70 in Sydney University’s meager 168 off 49.4 overs.

He then took the new ball with Stuart Clark and finished with 3-19 off seven overs as the Students dismissed Penrith for 141 in 41 overs.

Meanwhile, Sydney University opener Greg Mail moved into third place on the all-time list of runscorers in First Grade with his century round nine century against Campbelltown-Camden on January 7.

Mail’s 100 in the limited overs match, took him to 11,904 First Grade runs, passing Richard Chee Quee (11,874) on the way. Only Greg Hayne (12,354) and Warren Bardsley (12,116) have scored more First Grade runs in the Sydney first grade competition.

It was Mail’s 35th First Grade century, leaving him one behind the record shared by Bardsley and Victor Trumper and equal with Bob Simpson.
