Sydney University’s chances of making the Sydney grade cricket semi-finals are taking on a ‘remote’ prognosis after a disastrous day at the office on Saturday.

The Students were rolled for 69 in just 33 overs after being sent in to bat by Gordon at No.1 Oval.

Gordon quicks Charlie Stobo (4-34) and Daniel Smith (3-15) did the damage before the visitors went to stumps at 8-216, thanks to solid knocks from Cameron Eccles (76), Will Smith (57) and Elliot Richtor (34). Will Somerville did his best to stem the tide, finishing with 6-81.

The Students will be hoping to salvage something on day two, but with just five rounds to be played after next Saturday, their chances of reeling in the top six are looking grim.

Sydney head the First Grade Belvedere Cup ladder on 48 points, with Bankstown (36), Penrith (36), Eastern Suburbs (35) St George (30) and Randwick-Petersham (30) making up the top six.

They’re trailed by Blacktown (30), Campbelltown-Camden (28), Fairfield-Liverpool (26), Northern District (24) and Sydney University (24) in 11th place.

Sydney University lie sixth on the Club Championship on 678 points, behind St George (819), Penrith (805), Sutherland (799) Sydney (782) and Northern District (709).

Third and Fourth grades lead their competitions, while Second Grade lie 8th and Fifth Grade sit in 9th place. Sydney University’s Poidevin-Gray Shield side are also in 9th place, while the A.W. Green Shield side finished their competition 19th of 20 teams.

Following the present clash with Gordon, Sydney University will play four two-day fixtures, against Parramatta at Old King’s Oval on January 30-31, UNSW at the Village Green on February 6-12, Hawkesbury at Sydney University No.1 Oval; on February 20-21, and Penrith at Howell Oval on February 27 and March 5, before rounding out the competition proper with a limited overs match against Fairfield-Liverpool at Rosedale Oval on Saturday, March 12.
