Sydney University 1st Grade’s 25-18 loss to Manly in round 10 last season will still be very much front of mind for Sydney Uni’s young squad as the two club’s clash again in a round 2 blockbuster this weekend at Manly Oval.

On a cold and wet Saturday in 2011 Sydney University experienced a heart breaking loss at Manly Oval, when the Marlins were able to defend their line in the dying minutes of the game to register a 7 point win.

“Last season we were just beaten on the bell in what was another dramatic game of season 2011,” re-lived Louden.

“This loss is very much in the minds of some of our players and is driving them for a big performance this weekend. To beat Manly at Manly would be quite an achievement, especially this early in the season.

“It was great to register a win in round one against West Harbour, but the team will really need to step up against Manly.

“Manly have the biggest forward pack in the competition, which is a tradition for the Marlins, and it is going to be an extremely physical encounter for both sides.”

“Leading the Club Championship after a very strong performance across the Club is a fantastic way to start the 2012 season,” commented Todd Dammers, Director of Rugby.

“We are certainly not getting ahead of ourselves as it is early days in a very long and difficult competition and the Club will need to put in solid performances across the board to stay in front.”

The Colt’s fixtures this weekend will also see three highly contested games of rugby.

“It was great to start the 2012 season with three wins on the weekend against West Harbour, who are consistent performers in the colts’ competition,” said Sydney Uni Director of Colts Jack Farrer.

“All teams have walked away with areas that require improvement if we are to match it this weekend against Manly.”

“Manly have always been a dominant club in the colt’s competition, with very consistent results across all three grades,” commented Farrer.

“Last year in round 21, our Colts 1 side had to beat Manly to secure the Minor Premiership and the 2011 Colts Club Championship, it was a very physical and tightly contested game that went down to the wire with Sydney Uni clinching the win 28-25.”
