Sydney University have finished off the 2013 NEAFL season with a competitive 75 point loss to Minor Premiers the Sydney Swans, on Sunday afternoon.

Playing at the SCG, Sydney Uni started strongly and kicked three of the first five goals in the game before finding themselves down by 19 points at the first break.

The Students put in another solid second quarter performance and the margin was only 27 points at half-time. The inaccurate kicking from the Swans was accentuated by some solid defence from the Students, who put in a great performance against the number one team in the Eastern Conference.

The Swans showed their class in the second half, comfortably taking the game 18.23-131 to 8.8-56.

Despite the scoreline, the performance was far better than the one against the Swans during the preseason.

“It was a solid way to finish a more competitive year in 2013,” said Sydney University Head Coach, Daniel Gilmore.

“We played to instruction and competed fiercely which is a great sign to see after 18 games and no prospect of finals to play for. We learnt a lot and each player can reflect on their SCG experience. The players can use this to motivate themselves to improve over the off season and summer ahead.”

Gilmore highlighted a few of his players who really stood up in the game and made it considerably more competitive than the last two times the teams met.

“Tom Morrison, Gerard Wilkie and Tom Ayton were standouts in the midfield, while Mitchell Thompson and Josh Cole were outstanding in defence. Tom Elkington continues to grow as an on field warrior with four goals up forward and some part time ruck work.”

Sydney Uni finished eighth in their second season in NEAFL. Highlights included victories over third placed Ainslie and reigning premiers Queanbeyan.
