Sydney University posted an impressive 38-25 win over Randwick at No.1 Oval on Saturday to move into third place on the Shute Shield ladder.
The set-piece platform was more than sturdy and Uni ultimately ran in six tries to three after holding a commanding 26-6 lead at the break.
A one-point loss in fourth grade denied SUFC a clean sweep of Randwick and the solid results have the Students back atop the club championship.
Eastwood, Southern Districts and Manly fans would vehemently disagree, but the Uni-Randwick first-grade clash may well have been a dress-rehearsal for this year’s grand final.
The Woodies are flying high at the top of the comp, the Rebels are building on last year’s grand-final appearance and the Marlins are capable of anything on their day.
But Uni are adapting well to coach Chris Malone’s style and Randwick were on a streak before the weekend. The Galloping Greens did make the scoreline respectable from a 20-point deficit.
Still, given Uni’s capability at the set-piece, the possibilities for the talented mix of youth and experience under Malone’s expansive style is mouth-watering.
