Sydney University’s first innings win over Penrith at Howell Oval on Saturday took the defending premiers to the top of the First Grade ladder after five rounds of the Belvidere Cup, Sydney premier grade cricket competition.

With four wins from five matches, the Students are on 24 competition points, with Campbelltown-Camden (20), Parramatta (20), Manly-Warringah (20), Sydney (20) and Eastern Suburbs (19) making up the top six.

Penrith began the second day of the two-match at 0-3, after Sydney University batted for most of the first day to post 320 off 90.2 overs.

The Students were 4-87 before Damien Mortimer (73), Tim Cummins (70 not out), Hayden Kerr and (59) came to the rescue, with Luke Hodges causing most trouble with the ball, finishing with 4-73 from 20 overs.

Penrith had a similar top order start and were 5-84 before Michael Castle and Jonathon Sammut entered the fray.

When Sammut departed for 54, Sydney University wrapped up the tail and the visitors were all out for 285.

Castle remained 109 not out, with 12 boundaries and two sixes, while Dugald Holloway (3-43), Hayden Kerr (2-22) and Tim Ley (2-59) shared the bowling honours.

Penrith collected the points in a tight Second Grade fixture at Sydney University Oval.

The visitors finished with 8-282 in reply to the Sydney University’s 281, with opener Brent Atherton guiding the visitors home with a stoic 119, which included eight boundaries and a pair of sixes.

Sydney University collected first innings points in Third Grade, while Penrith snared first innings points in Fourth Grade and outright points in Fifth Grade.

The mixed results saw SUCC slip to fourth on the Club Championship on 426 points, behind Sydney (468), Parramatta (463) and Manly-Warringah (443).

Round six of the competition is another two-day affair, with Sydney University up against Sydney at Drummoyne Oval.

Meanwhile, Sydney University skipper Nick Larkin was a member of the First CXI side that played out a draw against England, in the visitor’s final warm-up match before the First Test of the Ashes starting at the Gabba in Brisbane on Thursday.

Larkin (30) and Jake Carder (39) put on a 66-run opening stand against an England attack featuring Stuart Broad, Chris Woakes and Moeen Ali.

The First CXI were all out for 251; England replied with 515, and the First CXI were 4-364 when stumps were drawn.
