The Queen’s Birthday long-weekend provided a welcome break for most winter sports at the halfway mark of the season.
Sydney University teams will be back in action this weekend with finals finishes in line for many teams.
AFL
In AFL, Sydney University will take on Pennant Hills at Mike Kenny Oval on Saturday.
The Students’ last round loss to North Shore saw them drop to third on the Premier League ladder. East Coast Eagles and Balmain head the ladder with eight wins from of nine rounds, with Sydney University, North Shore, Pennant Hills and UNSW-Eastern Suburbs making up the top six.
The Students are running third on the Division One ladder behind Manly-Warringah and Macquarie University; fourth on the Division Two ladder behind Penrith, Balmain and Holroyd-Parramatta; third on the Division Five ladder behind Southern Power and Saints; and third on the Under 18 Premier Cup ladder behind East Coast Eagles and North Shore.
Rugby Union
Sydney University Football Club will resume the Shute Shield competition hosting Round 10 matches against Warringah at No.1 Oval. The match will coincide with a gala Community and Diversity day.
SUFC are now fourth on the Shute Shield ladder behind Eastwood (47), Eastern Suburbs (37) and Manly (36). SUFC Second Grade are also fourth, behind Eastwood, Manly and Northern Suburbs; Thirds sit second behind Randwick, and Fourths head the table. The Colts head the First, Second and Third grade tables.
Sydney University also leads the Club Championship on 1510 points, with Eastwood second on 1401 and Manly third on 1400, while the Colts Club Championship is headed by Sydney University on 469 points from Manly (392) and Eastern Suburbs (348).
Soccer
With washed-out matches rescheduled amid the busy draw, there’s no rest for the Super League players. They’ll meet Northern Tigers at Mills Park on Sunday, with a 3pm kick-off in First Grade and a 1pm start in the Under 20s.
Sydney University are ninth on the Super League ladder after 12 rounds, with Western Sydney Berries leading the way and Spirit FC, Macarthur Rams, Granville Rage, Blacktown Spartans and St George FC making up the top six.
The news is better in the Under 20’s camp where Sydney University sit atop the ladder with nine wins from 12 rounds. Spirit FC, Central Coast FC, St George FC, Northern Tigers and Hills Brumbies make up the top six.
Baseball
The Sydney Winter League Baseball competition will resume this weekend with Sydney University hosting Pirates at Sydney University No.2 Oval.
After nine round of the Winter League, Sydney University are sixth in the First Grade competition behind Marrickville, Pirates, Petersham, Greenway and Cronulla; seventh on the Second Grade table; and third on the Third Grade table behind Hawkesbury and West Sydney Boomers.
Rugby League
Sydney University Rugby League Club is competing in Second Division in the Tertiary league this season.
Following their 28-14 loss to Bathurst Grizzlies on June 4, Sydney University will resume with a Round 11 clash with UTS Tigers at Jack Nash Reserve on June 18, with a 1.30pm kick-off.
Hockey
After a week’s respite in the Women’s Metro League, Sydney University Firsts will meet Briars in a Round 10 clash on the Olympic Pitch, with a 3pm start.
The Firsts are second on the competition ladder behind Moorebank, with Esquires and Gordon North Shore making up the top four.
In the lower grades, Sydney University are second to Moorebank on the Second Grade table; and fifth on the Metro Three table.
In the Men’s Premier League, Sydney University will meet competition leaders Moorebank-Liverpool in a Round 12 clash on Saturday. The Students are ninth on the Premier League ladder and 10th on the Second Grade ladder.
In Division One, Sydney University are seventh in First Grade and third in Second Grade, while in Division Two, First Grade are fifth and Second Grade sit fourth.
