Competing against 22 other universities, Sydney University have begun their defence of the Australian University Snow Sports Championships in emphatic fashion, racking up five medals after day 1 at Mount Buller, Victoria.
The first event of the week was the Giant Slalom, where Sydney Uni’s Tom Jacobs won gold and Alex Podgorski bronze in the male ski category amongst over one metre of fresh snow. In the female ski, Sydney Uni team manager Nicole Wilson took out the bronze medal amongst some extremely tough opposition.
In the board category Sydney Uni won women’s gold through Millie O’Brien. Fellow Sydney Uni boarders also claimed fourth and fifth placings. Camus Ulloa-Jonsson was the University’s highest place getter in the men’s event, finishing 14th.
It was then onto the moguls in the afternoon, an event Sydney Uni has traditionally done quite well in. Eliza Graham once again proved she is a freestyle skiing champion with a silver medal in the women’s category. Sydney Uni’s next two best riders placed sixth (Nicole Wilson) and 10th (Holly Robson) respectively. The men were feeling the effect of losing their mogul leader, Josh Himbury, to a broken wrist last weekend with only Ben Chapman making the final. Chapman managed a commendable 12th amongst some seriously talented skiers.
Sydney Uni will be looking to add to their two gold, one silver and two bronze medals as day 2 action gets under way on Tuesday morning.
