The Australian Women’s Water Polo team claimed bronze at the FINA World Super League Final over the weekend with five Sydney Uni players in the side.

They faced local team, China in Shanghai, but never gave the home side a chance after a dominant display in the first half which gave the Aussie girls a five goal lead at the major break (8 – 3).

Continuing her strong Olympic campaign, Keesja Gofers contributed three goals for the Stingers. Gofers has played at Sydney Uni with the Lions since she was ten years old, she captained the National Women’s Water Polo side that claimed their first ever championship and is in fine form leading in to the Olympics.

With the FINA tournament rounding out the Stingers three week trip overseas, there are no major competitions left before the team heads to Rio in August. With final team selection occurring later in June, another Sydney Uni star, Lea Yanitsas couldn’t have found her form at a better time. The backbone of the Lions defence, Yanitsas performed exceptionally well throughout the series being rewarded the title of Goal Keeper of the tournament. Her impressive efforts left China goalless in the second half of the match.

The coaching staff were impressed and happy with the performances of the team throughout the tournament, winning matches against teams they will face at the Olympics in the earlier preliminary rounds.  We wish our Sydney Uni stars the best of luck in the coming weeks and we hope to see them representing Australia in Rio.
