Sydney Uni Athletics Club (SUAC) athletes covered themselves in glory over the weekend competing at the Canberra and Adelaide Track Classics and the NSW Masters Championships.
The star of the show was Ella Nelson, who smashed her personal best in the 100m. She ran a 11.42s, which is an SUAC club record. Most pleasing for Nelson was that she was able to beat home reigning Australian 100m record holder Melissa Breen. Later in the meet in the 200m Nelson produced the best run of her career, running a 22.53s. This was another personal best, an Olympic qualifier and an SUAC club record. The performance was the 7th fastest ever by an Australian female and the fastest time by an Australian since Mel Gainsford-Taylor in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
Michelle Jenneke ran her fastest race of the season to win the 100m hurdles in Canberra. Jenneke clocked a very slick 13.07s to win comfortably in the nation’s capital. Angus Armstrong also won hi pole vault in Canberra, jumping 5.35m.
In Adelaide Annie Rubie continued her phenomenal season winning the women’s 400m, and in the same race Courtney Schultz put in a big PB to finish 6th. Jenny Blundell took home the gold in the women’s 800m, beating out a very strong field and continuing her push for an Olympic qualifying performance in the 1500m. SUAC’s Jack Colreavy won the men’s steeplechase in a time of 8.52s, which was a huge personal best and a positive sign that his first national title might not be too far away.
At the NSW Masters Championships SUAC won 5 gold and 2 silver medals. Golds went to Brett Halls (800/1500m), Gemma Glynne (800m), James Polson (800m), Brendon Hyde (5000m walk), with Silver medals going to Larissa Stanley (800m) and Andrew Heil (800m).
